Narrative:
On departure from mlb, requested frequency to obtain status of avon MOA and restr area R2901 to determine route to sebring (sef). Tower did not know frequency with information. Contacted daytona to request if MOA/R2901 was hot. Referred to orlando approach control, who also did not have information. Referred to ZMA frequency, requested status of MOA/R2901 and IFR clearance to sebring from orlando approach. Squawk code given by orlando verified, position and altitude verified with controller. Xferred to ZMA. Controller requested 'what would be your direct heading to sebring and what is seabring's designation?' response of '260 degrees' and 'ksef' given. Controller stated 'clearance not yet available, maintain 260 degree heading, maintain VFR until return with clearance.' near ksef, attempted to contact ZMA without success. On landing, message to call watch supervisor at ZMA received. Call made, and was informed that R2901 was 'hot' and was violated en route to sef. Supervisor stated miami controller had informed us that the area was active. He stated he had not checked the tapes. He stated miami controller had failed to hand us off to him in the area of ksef. He warned of the possible consequences of violation of this airspace, and stated no further report or action would be undertaken. 3 pilots on board -- none heard controller state area active, and such a statement was never acknowledged. Vector given by ATC was followed without ever getting answer to question of activity of MOA/R2901.

Narrative: ON DEP FROM MLB, REQUESTED FREQ TO OBTAIN STATUS OF AVON MOA AND RESTR AREA R2901 TO DETERMINE RTE TO SEBRING (SEF). TWR DID NOT KNOW FREQ WITH INFO. CONTACTED DAYTONA TO REQUEST IF MOA/R2901 WAS HOT. REFERRED TO ORLANDO APCH CTL, WHO ALSO DID NOT HAVE INFO. REFERRED TO ZMA FREQ, REQUESTED STATUS OF MOA/R2901 AND IFR CLRNC TO SEBRING FROM ORLANDO APCH. SQUAWK CODE GIVEN BY ORLANDO VERIFIED, POS AND ALT VERIFIED WITH CTLR. XFERRED TO ZMA. CTLR REQUESTED 'WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DIRECT HDG TO SEBRING AND WHAT IS SEABRING'S DESIGNATION?' RESPONSE OF '260 DEGS' AND 'KSEF' GIVEN. CTLR STATED 'CLRNC NOT YET AVAILABLE, MAINTAIN 260 DEG HDG, MAINTAIN VFR UNTIL RETURN WITH CLRNC.' NEAR KSEF, ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT ZMA WITHOUT SUCCESS. ON LNDG, MESSAGE TO CALL WATCH SUPVR AT ZMA RECEIVED. CALL MADE, AND WAS INFORMED THAT R2901 WAS 'HOT' AND WAS VIOLATED ENRTE TO SEF. SUPVR STATED MIAMI CTLR HAD INFORMED US THAT THE AREA WAS ACTIVE.
