Narrative:

I was flying my christen eagle ii, aerobatic biplane about 10 mi southwest of tmb in the normal practice area. Before calling tower for landing instructions, I listened to ATIS and received the appropriate information. I called tower and was given clearance to land on runway 9R. I asked for runway 9L as that is closest to my hangar and fueling area. I was cleared for runway 9L. For a reason I cannot explain, I lined up for runway 9R (approximately 5 mi west) and continued toward to the runway. The controller asked if I wanted runway 9R as that was the runway I was approaching. I apologized for my mistake and lined up for runway 9L and landed. I had an interruption when my microphone began to stick (a somewhat recurring problem since a new intercom was installed recently) and this is the only reason I can think of that caused me to line up on the wrong runway. Fortunately, there were no conflicts. This just goes to show that a wide awake, alert pilot familiar with the airport and runway system can make an elementary mistake.

Title: AN EAGLE II PLT, AFTER REQUESTING RWY 9L FOR LNDG, LINED UP ON RWY 9R. AFTER BEING ADVISED OF THE DEV BY A VIGILANT TWR CTLR, THE CORRECT RWY WAS SELECTED.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING MY CHRISTEN EAGLE II, AEROBATIC BIPLANE ABOUT 10 MI SW OF TMB IN THE NORMAL PRACTICE AREA. BEFORE CALLING TWR FOR LNDG INSTRUCTIONS, I LISTENED TO ATIS AND RECEIVED THE APPROPRIATE INFO. I CALLED TWR AND WAS GIVEN CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 9R. I ASKED FOR RWY 9L AS THAT IS CLOSEST TO MY HANGAR AND FUELING AREA. I WAS CLRED FOR RWY 9L. FOR A REASON I CANNOT EXPLAIN, I LINED UP FOR RWY 9R (APPROX 5 MI W) AND CONTINUED TOWARD TO THE RWY. THE CTLR ASKED IF I WANTED RWY 9R AS THAT WAS THE RWY I WAS APCHING. I APOLOGIZED FOR MY MISTAKE AND LINED UP FOR RWY 9L AND LANDED. I HAD AN INTERRUPTION WHEN MY MIKE BEGAN TO STICK (A SOMEWHAT RECURRING PROB SINCE A NEW INTERCOM WAS INSTALLED RECENTLY) AND THIS IS THE ONLY REASON I CAN THINK OF THAT CAUSED ME TO LINE UP ON THE WRONG RWY. FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO CONFLICTS. THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT A WIDE AWAKE, ALERT PLT FAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT AND RWY SYS CAN MAKE AN ELEMENTARY MISTAKE.
