Narrative:
After landing, we requested clearance to taxi back to active. Confusion began with tower controllers using incorrect tail numbers and the fact that several other aircraft were taxiing to different runways at the same time. We were cleared to taxi and hold short of an intersecting taxiway for conflicting traffic. After this aircraft cleared, we were instructed to continue taxi. We misunderstood this clearance to mean to taxi into position for an intersection departure. Tower informed us that we were not cleared into position and then cleared us for takeoff. Future instances may be avoided by limiting use of multiple runways. Supplemental information from acn 560505: there was also too much conversation from both the crew and the examiner which made the confusion in the cockpit even worse. To avoid this kind of situation, I would recommend a sterile cockpit and no movement of aircraft until clearance could be confirmed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY INCURSION WHEN THE 2 PLTS ON A RATING RIDE IN A C208 TAKE THE RWY WHEN ONLY CLRED TO TAXI AND HOLD SHORT AT BAF, MA.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG, WE REQUESTED CLRNC TO TAXI BACK TO ACTIVE. CONFUSION BEGAN WITH TWR CTLRS USING INCORRECT TAIL NUMBERS AND THE FACT THAT SEVERAL OTHER ACFT WERE TAXIING TO DIFFERENT RWYS AT THE SAME TIME. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI AND HOLD SHORT OF AN INTERSECTING TXWY FOR CONFLICTING TFC. AFTER THIS ACFT CLRED, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CONTINUE TAXI. WE MISUNDERSTOOD THIS CLRNC TO MEAN TO TAXI INTO POS FOR AN INTXN DEP. TWR INFORMED US THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED INTO POS AND THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF. FUTURE INSTANCES MAY BE AVOIDED BY LIMITING USE OF MULTIPLE RWYS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 560505: THERE WAS ALSO TOO MUCH CONVERSATION FROM BOTH THE CREW AND THE EXAMINER WHICH MADE THE CONFUSION IN THE COCKPIT EVEN WORSE. TO AVOID THIS KIND OF SIT, I WOULD RECOMMEND A STERILE COCKPIT AND NO MOVEMENT OF ACFT UNTIL CLRNC COULD BE CONFIRMED.
