Narrative:
On pushback, after normal engine start, ground/maintenance personnel were cleared off aircraft. #2 engine anti-ice disagreement light came on. While troubleshooting, ground control called and informed us the #2 engine had 'torched.' looked at #2 engine and it was rolling back, no other indication. An aircraft taxiing behind our aircraft said #2 engine was on fire (no indication in cockpit). Shut down #2 engine, pulled fire handle and discharged agent in accordance with the checklist. Another aircraft then called on radio and said engine was 'still burning and we needed to get out of the aircraft.' (no indication of fire in cockpit.) we then called for fire trucks, ran the ground evacuate/evacuation checklist, and evacuate/evacuationed the aircraft via the slide at door 1L. No injuries to any personnel, and fire was apparently in tail pipe of engine. No visible damage to the aircraft. Never was any indication of fire in the cockpit. But figured the pilots talking/calling us on the radio probably were not joking.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD11 FLC HAS CTR ENG FIRE DURING START AT MEM. ACFT IS EVACED.
Narrative: ON PUSHBACK, AFTER NORMAL ENG START, GND/MAINT PERSONNEL WERE CLRED OFF ACFT. #2 ENG ANTI-ICE DISAGREEMENT LIGHT CAME ON. WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING, GND CTL CALLED AND INFORMED US THE #2 ENG HAD 'TORCHED.' LOOKED AT #2 ENG AND IT WAS ROLLING BACK, NO OTHER INDICATION. AN ACFT TAXIING BEHIND OUR ACFT SAID #2 ENG WAS ON FIRE (NO INDICATION IN COCKPIT). SHUT DOWN #2 ENG, PULLED FIRE HANDLE AND DISCHARGED AGENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CHKLIST. ANOTHER ACFT THEN CALLED ON RADIO AND SAID ENG WAS 'STILL BURNING AND WE NEEDED TO GET OUT OF THE ACFT.' (NO INDICATION OF FIRE IN COCKPIT.) WE THEN CALLED FOR FIRE TRUCKS, RAN THE GND EVAC CHKLIST, AND EVACED THE ACFT VIA THE SLIDE AT DOOR 1L. NO INJURIES TO ANY PERSONNEL, AND FIRE WAS APPARENTLY IN TAIL PIPE OF ENG. NO VISIBLE DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. NEVER WAS ANY INDICATION OF FIRE IN THE COCKPIT. BUT FIGURED THE PLTS TALKING/CALLING US ON THE RADIO PROBABLY WERE NOT JOKING.
