Narrative:
While taxiing for departure, I had the co-captain review the south departure procedure with me. He missed the requirement to be at 4.3 DME before leaving 1500 ft MSL for 2000 ft MSL. I climbed to 1800 ft before the departure controller told us to watch our climb and refer to the SID. We descended back to 1500 ft at which time we were outside the required DME and resumed our climb. I should have read the SID myself before taxiing.
