Narrative:
Descending from 6000-4000 ft heading 180 degrees assigned. Passing approximately 5000 ft (with spdbrakes extended) and very close to the localizer, ATC assigned us a heading of 230 degrees to intercept the localizer and cleared us for the ILS runway 26L. Unfortunately, we were so close to the localizer when cleared to intercept it that the autoplt/FMC captured, but then overshot the localizer while in a descending r-hand turn. TCASII was set to below 6000 ft and showed clear at this time. ATC then gave us a new heading of 280 degrees to reintercept the localizer (it was still captured on the ADI). While descending through approximately 4700 ft, we received a TA followed immediately by an RA to 'climb, climb, climb.' we saw the other aircraft on TCASII, lowered the speed brakes and executed a manual climbing r-hand turn away from it. We reported the climb and RA to ATC. They said 'ok,' and switched us to tower frequency. The rest of the approach and landing was uneventful. Very late clearance and vector to intercept localizer -- too late. Thank god for TCASII, we never saw the other guy.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767 FLC RECEIVES LATE VECTORS ONTO FINAL. WHILE TRYING TO INTERCEPT, THEY RECEIVED A TCASII RA TO CLB.
Narrative: DSNDING FROM 6000-4000 FT HDG 180 DEGS ASSIGNED. PASSING APPROX 5000 FT (WITH SPDBRAKES EXTENDED) AND VERY CLOSE TO THE LOC, ATC ASSIGNED US A HDG OF 230 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE LOC AND CLRED US FOR THE ILS RWY 26L. UNFORTUNATELY, WE WERE SO CLOSE TO THE LOC WHEN CLRED TO INTERCEPT IT THAT THE AUTOPLT/FMC CAPTURED, BUT THEN OVERSHOT THE LOC WHILE IN A DSNDING R-HAND TURN. TCASII WAS SET TO BELOW 6000 FT AND SHOWED CLR AT THIS TIME. ATC THEN GAVE US A NEW HDG OF 280 DEGS TO REINTERCEPT THE LOC (IT WAS STILL CAPTURED ON THE ADI). WHILE DSNDING THROUGH APPROX 4700 FT, WE RECEIVED A TA FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY AN RA TO 'CLB, CLB, CLB.' WE SAW THE OTHER ACFT ON TCASII, LOWERED THE SPD BRAKES AND EXECUTED A MANUAL CLBING R-HAND TURN AWAY FROM IT. WE RPTED THE CLB AND RA TO ATC. THEY SAID 'OK,' AND SWITCHED US TO TWR FREQ. THE REST OF THE APCH AND LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. VERY LATE CLRNC AND VECTOR TO INTERCEPT LOC -- TOO LATE. THANK GOD FOR TCASII, WE NEVER SAW THE OTHER GUY.
