Narrative:
Normal flight from ord to dfw. We were cleared to intercept runway 18R localizer and cleared for the visual. WX was good, but low sun directly in front. We contacted tower and they said runway 18L was available. I looked out and saw 2 parallel runways, the control tower to the left, and what appeared as the right runway under construction. I assumed these were runways 18L/right and accepted the runway 18L. We were slightly high and worked on slowing, configuring, and performing the final checklist. We had just completed it when tower said we were lined up for runway 17C. There was no traffic and they cleared us to land on runway 17C. We landed and went to the gate uneventfully. Tower said there was no problem. Causes: sun diminished airport sighting, inexperience with dfw, accepting a last min change, and the never forgiving assumption of the correct runway. In the future, as I have usually done, I will be more aware and not accept last min changes unless there is plenty of time to rebrief.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WRONG RWY APCH BY AN A320 FLT CREW WHEN TWR ASKS THEIR PREFERENCE BTWN RWY 18R AND RWY 18L. PIC ENDED UP MAKING AN APCH TO RWY 17C AT DFW, TX.
Narrative: NORMAL FLT FROM ORD TO DFW. WE WERE CLRED TO INTERCEPT RWY 18R LOC AND CLRED FOR THE VISUAL. WX WAS GOOD, BUT LOW SUN DIRECTLY IN FRONT. WE CONTACTED TWR AND THEY SAID RWY 18L WAS AVAILABLE. I LOOKED OUT AND SAW 2 PARALLEL RWYS, THE CTL TWR TO THE L, AND WHAT APPEARED AS THE R RWY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. I ASSUMED THESE WERE RWYS 18L/R AND ACCEPTED THE RWY 18L. WE WERE SLIGHTLY HIGH AND WORKED ON SLOWING, CONFIGURING, AND PERFORMING THE FINAL CHKLIST. WE HAD JUST COMPLETED IT WHEN TWR SAID WE WERE LINED UP FOR RWY 17C. THERE WAS NO TFC AND THEY CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 17C. WE LANDED AND WENT TO THE GATE UNEVENTFULLY. TWR SAID THERE WAS NO PROB. CAUSES: SUN DIMINISHED ARPT SIGHTING, INEXPERIENCE WITH DFW, ACCEPTING A LAST MIN CHANGE, AND THE NEVER FORGIVING ASSUMPTION OF THE CORRECT RWY. IN THE FUTURE, AS I HAVE USUALLY DONE, I WILL BE MORE AWARE AND NOT ACCEPT LAST MIN CHANGES UNLESS THERE IS PLENTY OF TIME TO REBRIEF.
