Narrative:

I was providing on-the-job instruction to an air traffic controller in training. We work in the kennedy area of the ny TRACON. We were training on combined radar position. I informed the developmental controller that his sequencing plan for the final into jfk airport was not going to work. Immediately following my comments the developmental controller issued additional instructions to an aircraft which compounded the situation. I attempted to rectify the situation by taking over the frequency and issuing new control instructions, but by the time I did this, it was too late and I lost standard separation.
