Narrative:

The morning of may/mon/03, air carrier X from orf to msp, we were in the descent phase of flight. We had already got the ATIS and the altimeter setting was 29.44 for msp. Approach control gave us a crossing restr to cross at 10000 ft. When we got there, ATC asked us what was our altitude, we replied 10000 ft. He then said what's your altimeter setting, because it should be 29.44. We replied with embarrassment 30.44 and that meant we were 1000 ft off. We immediately corrected the altimeter setting and climbed back to the appropriate altitude. I have no idea why the first officer and myself put in 30.44 because I had the correct setting on my paper from the ATIS. I believe the cause for this was, we put the incorrect altimeter setting which caused us to be close to 1000 ft off altitude.

Title: ACR CREW MISSET ALTIMETERS BY 1 INCH WHEN SETTING QNH. THEY WERE 1000 FT BELOW THEIR CLRED ALT.

Narrative: THE MORNING OF MAY/MON/03, ACR X FROM ORF TO MSP, WE WERE IN THE DSCNT PHASE OF FLT. WE HAD ALREADY GOT THE ATIS AND THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS 29.44 FOR MSP. APCH CTL GAVE US A XING RESTR TO CROSS AT 10000 FT. WHEN WE GOT THERE, ATC ASKED US WHAT WAS OUR ALT, WE REPLIED 10000 FT. HE THEN SAID WHAT'S YOUR ALTIMETER SETTING, BECAUSE IT SHOULD BE 29.44. WE REPLIED WITH EMBARRASSMENT 30.44 AND THAT MEANT WE WERE 1000 FT OFF. WE IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED THE ALTIMETER SETTING AND CLBED BACK TO THE APPROPRIATE ALT. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THE FO AND MYSELF PUT IN 30.44 BECAUSE I HAD THE CORRECT SETTING ON MY PAPER FROM THE ATIS. I BELIEVE THE CAUSE FOR THIS WAS, WE PUT THE INCORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING WHICH CAUSED US TO BE CLOSE TO 1000 FT OFF ALT.
