Narrative:
We were flying in the designated practice area: 'D-south' and 'D-north.' I made my last position call before returning to ft pierce, 3 mi southwest of the turn pike at 2000 ft. 1 min later, I got a position report of a classmate. He was overhead of the turn pike at 1500 ft performing steep turns. 1 min after that, I looked over my left and saw the aircraft at about 100 ft away at the same altitude doing a steep turn to the left. He was at my altitude while he said 1500 ft. He also wasn't overhead of the turnpike, but 3 mi south of that. He made a wrong position report. When I saw him, I called 'traffic!' and made a 360 degree turn while climbing to 2500 ft. After this, I continued my heading. I spoke with him after the flight and he said that he would like to stay anonymous and that he learned his lesson. Because he is a friend and classmate of mine I respected that.
