Narrative:
While en route to stl, we were given a clearance to climb to 29000 ft. After setting 29000 ft in the altitude selector, ATC comes back and tells us to stop at 27000 ft. Being the PNF, I read back the clearance to stop at 27000 ft. Then ATC asked our current attitude and clearance and I responded 'we are climbing to 29000 ft.' what happened was the PF forgot to set 27000 ft in the altitude selector and I also failed to check it. We flew 700 ft past 27000 ft before initiating a rapid correction to descend back to 27000 ft. At this time another air carrier flight was approaching in the opposite direction at 28000 ft. He reported that he got a TA on his TCASII. At this time we had him in sight. All said and done we came about 300 ft vertical and 10 mi from subject flight. At the time that he flew by us we were level at 27000 ft.

Narrative: WHILE ENRTE TO STL, WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO CLB TO 29000 FT. AFTER SETTING 29000 FT IN THE ALT SELECTOR, ATC COMES BACK AND TELLS US TO STOP AT 27000 FT. BEING THE PNF, I READ BACK THE CLRNC TO STOP AT 27000 FT. THEN ATC ASKED OUR CURRENT ATTITUDE AND CLRNC AND I RESPONDED 'WE ARE CLBING TO 29000 FT.' WHAT HAPPENED WAS THE PF FORGOT TO SET 27000 FT IN THE ALT SELECTOR AND I ALSO FAILED TO CHK IT. WE FLEW 700 FT PAST 27000 FT BEFORE INITIATING A RAPID CORRECTION TO DSND BACK TO 27000 FT. AT THIS TIME ANOTHER ACR FLT WAS APCHING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AT 28000 FT. HE RPTED THAT HE GOT A TA ON HIS TCASII. AT THIS TIME WE HAD HIM IN SIGHT. ALL SAID AND DONE WE CAME ABOUT 300 FT VERT AND 10 MI FROM SUBJECT FLT. AT THE TIME THAT HE FLEW BY US WE WERE LEVEL AT 27000 FT.
