Narrative:

We were given taxi instructions to taxi to runway 12. I was running the taxi and before takeoff checklists. We missed our turn and taxied onto the runway. We came to a complete stop and realized that we were not cleared onto the runway. The tower gave us a position and hold clearance, then a takeoff clearance. The departure was uneventful. The thing that I learned from this mistake, was that I should have reviewed and followed the airport diagram better, and that even though we're doing the required checklists, our eyes should be outside, assuring in having better situational awareness.
