Narrative:
On radar vector for VOR/DME approach at mhr, leveling at 6000 ft, received TA showing traffic at 12 O'clock position, and 500 ft above within 1 mi (approximately) momentarily thereafter received RA to climb. First officer initiated climb and obtained visual, commenced turn away from traffic. ATC advised us of traffic at this time, leveled at 7500 ft in turn, clear of conflict, started descent to 6000 ft, reclred to 7000 ft and the approach, landed without further incident. Note: VMC above and below cloud layer. VMC at airport. Doubt other aircraft ever knew of our position. Aggressiveness of response exceeded climb rate commanded by RA indication on vsi, power application to aircraft in high lift flap confign at light gross weight after 4 hour flight. Crew on duty for 20 hours at time of RA, coast to coast operation, 2 consecutive short rest periods prior to this flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FREIGHTER HAS A CLOSE CALL, POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH AN UNKNOWN TYPE ACFT AT 6000 FT, 10 MI NE OF MHR, CA.
Narrative: ON RADAR VECTOR FOR VOR/DME APCH AT MHR, LEVELING AT 6000 FT, RECEIVED TA SHOWING TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK POS, AND 500 FT ABOVE WITHIN 1 MI (APPROX) MOMENTARILY THEREAFTER RECEIVED RA TO CLB. FO INITIATED CLB AND OBTAINED VISUAL, COMMENCED TURN AWAY FROM TFC. ATC ADVISED US OF TFC AT THIS TIME, LEVELED AT 7500 FT IN TURN, CLR OF CONFLICT, STARTED DSCNT TO 6000 FT, RECLRED TO 7000 FT AND THE APCH, LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NOTE: VMC ABOVE AND BELOW CLOUD LAYER. VMC AT ARPT. DOUBT OTHER ACFT EVER KNEW OF OUR POS. AGGRESSIVENESS OF RESPONSE EXCEEDED CLB RATE COMMANDED BY RA INDICATION ON VSI, PWR APPLICATION TO ACFT IN HIGH LIFT FLAP CONFIGN AT LIGHT GROSS WT AFTER 4 HR FLT. CREW ON DUTY FOR 20 HRS AT TIME OF RA, COAST TO COAST OP, 2 CONSECUTIVE SHORT REST PERIODS PRIOR TO THIS FLT.
