Narrative:
I was doing takeoffs and lndgs at ZZZ. While in the downwind leg (approximately midfield) for runway 18, the passenger and I observed an aircraft approaching from the west (left side) transitioning east with approximately 1/8 mi closure and close to same altitude. Due to possible conflict with approaching aircraft, my attention was diverted in attempt to avoid the aircraft's flight path. Transitioning aircraft was not communicating on ZZZ CTAF. Following the conflict, I cleared the area for a base turn. On to final turn, a group of large birds flew across the final approach path, again my attention was diverted. Upon approach and landing, the landing gear was not extended which resulted in a gear retracted landing. Contributing factors: distrs in traffic pattern caused missed checklist items. Near miss caught me off guard. Relying on another pilot for backup. Poor communication. Corrective actions: special emphasis on checklist items. Encouraging all pilots to communicate intentions on uncontrolled frequencys. Enforcement of advisory circulars concerning operations at uncontrolled airports. Human performance: distrs in the traffic pattern caused delay in checklist procedures that were never accomplished.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GEAR UP LNDG BY A LOW TIME BE76 CFI AFTER SOME DISTR IN THE TFC PATTERN WHICH INCLUDED A POTENTIAL CONFLICT AND A NEAR BIRD STRIKE ON FINAL AT ZZZ, US.
Narrative: I WAS DOING TKOFS AND LNDGS AT ZZZ. WHILE IN THE DOWNWIND LEG (APPROX MIDFIELD) FOR RWY 18, THE PAX AND I OBSERVED AN ACFT APCHING FROM THE W (L SIDE) TRANSITIONING E WITH APPROX 1/8 MI CLOSURE AND CLOSE TO SAME ALT. DUE TO POSSIBLE CONFLICT WITH APCHING ACFT, MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED IN ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE ACFT'S FLT PATH. TRANSITIONING ACFT WAS NOT COMMUNICATING ON ZZZ CTAF. FOLLOWING THE CONFLICT, I CLRED THE AREA FOR A BASE TURN. ON TO FINAL TURN, A GROUP OF LARGE BIRDS FLEW ACROSS THE FINAL APCH PATH, AGAIN MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED. UPON APCH AND LNDG, THE LNDG GEAR WAS NOT EXTENDED WHICH RESULTED IN A GEAR RETRACTED LNDG. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: DISTRS IN TFC PATTERN CAUSED MISSED CHKLIST ITEMS. NEAR MISS CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD. RELYING ON ANOTHER PLT FOR BACKUP. POOR COM. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON CHKLIST ITEMS. ENCOURAGING ALL PLTS TO COMMUNICATE INTENTIONS ON UNCTLED FREQS. ENFORCEMENT OF ADVISORY CIRCULARS CONCERNING OPS AT UNCTLED ARPTS. HUMAN PERFORMANCE: DISTRS IN THE TFC PATTERN CAUSED DELAY IN CHKLIST PROCS THAT WERE NEVER ACCOMPLISHED.
