Narrative:
On descent out of FL330, told #1 flight attendant that we could encounter some significant turbulence on our arrival. This estimate was made from isolated small cells in area and gusty winds in cle. Immediately after briefing the #1 flight attendant, the seatbelt sign was illuminated and flight attendant made an announcement. Leveled at FL290 and encountered moderate turbulence with some ice pellets followed by severe turbulence lasting 2-3 seconds. Aircraft accelerated +20-30 KTS, got overspd warning very briefly on 2 occasions. We lost approximately 150-200 ft during episode. Moderate turbulence lasted approximately 2 mins. 2 flight attendants in rear of aircraft stated cart was not secure, and one hit it with her chest during the incident. Medical assistance requested at the gate prior to our arrival on approach control after crew notified us of possible injuries to passenger. 1 passenger was xported via medical personnel.
