Narrative:

Immediately after takeoff, landing gear went up and then immediately came down again. Captain made PA to cabin that we had a problem with the indicator light for the landing gear doors. Either the switch was in error or the doors were not closing. We turned around and returned to dfw. The landing was normal, and we returned to the gate. At no time were we told that this was an 'emergency' landing, not were we told to 'prepare' the cabin. Only after the cabin door was opened in dfw, and the fire fighter came on board, were we informed that this was indeed considered an emergency landing. At this time, the captain explained the situation to us.
