Narrative:
On sep/sat/04, while performing overnight maintenance on aircraft X at ZZZ, technicians found #3 l-hand emergency door slide expiration date due oct/sat/04. The lead technician verified parts availability, door slide was delivered for aircraft X. The lead technician contacted inspection department. I arrived at the aircraft at approximately XA00 hours. I inspected (general visual) the #3 l-hand door structure and slide attach fittings, I inspected (general visual) the serviceable door slide to be installed. I found discrepancies with door structure, attach fittings or door slide to be installed. I verified serviceable parts tag to be complete and correctly filled out. The part number and serial number on the part's tag and door slide to be installed matched. I gave the technician 'ok to install' the #3 l-hand door slide. The door slide fit correct, the girt bar fit correct and the door slide bustle fit correct. On sep/tue/04, the records department discovered that the #3 l-hand door slide installed on the aircraft was the wrong part number. The part number installed on the #3 l-hand door was for the #4 l-hand door. At the time of discovery the aircraft was en route to ZZZZ. While on the ground at ZZZZ technicians were not able to install a serviceable slide due to no part in stock. The technicians placed #3 l-hand door on placard and complied with ddp (deferred item special procedure-MEL) procedures. 117 seats were blocked out, displacing 62 paying passenger. On sep/wed/04, the #3 l-hand door slide was replaced at ZZZ1.
