Narrative:
While holding short of runway 18L at cvg we were instructed to taxi into position and hold runway 18L. I acknowledged then busied myself with the before takeoff checklist. When I looked up there was an rj in front of us on the runway. The rj was cleared for takeoff and we were instructed to clear the runway. I am quite sure I heard the instruction to taxi into position and hold. The captain inquired as to whether the tower controller had placed 2 aircraft on the runway simultaneously. The answer was a sheepish 'I did.' I am hoping that this was not recorded as a runway incursion. When I get back to the left seat I intend on having every checklist item completed (to the final item) before taking the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 FO EXPRESSED CONCERN DURING DEP FROM CVG WHEN ATC TAXIED 2 ACFT ONTO THE RWY FOR TKOF.
Narrative: WHILE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 18L AT CVG WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 18L. I ACKNOWLEDGED THEN BUSIED MYSELF WITH THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. WHEN I LOOKED UP THERE WAS AN RJ IN FRONT OF US ON THE RWY. THE RJ WAS CLRED FOR TKOF AND WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CLR THE RWY. I AM QUITE SURE I HEARD THE INSTRUCTION TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. THE CAPT INQUIRED AS TO WHETHER THE TWR CTLR HAD PLACED 2 ACFT ON THE RWY SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE ANSWER WAS A SHEEPISH 'I DID.' I AM HOPING THAT THIS WAS NOT RECORDED AS A RWY INCURSION. WHEN I GET BACK TO THE L SEAT I INTEND ON HAVING EVERY CHKLIST ITEM COMPLETED (TO THE FINAL ITEM) BEFORE TAKING THE RWY.
