Narrative:
We departed FBO at sdf en route to runway 17L. Ground instructed us to hold short of the ILS clearway, which is only a very short distance after the turn onto taxiway east from the FBO. We crossed the hold line while still accomplishing the taxi checks. As I approached the runway, I realized we were already past the ILS hold, and stopped around 50 yards past the ILS hold. As we were stopping, ground called us and also instructed us to stop. We then taxied back to the proper spot. Ground told us we should've stopped at the flashing lights. There are no flashing lights on 'east' for the ILS hold line. While the hold line is clearly visible, it's faded significantly. The red 'ILS' sign is posted next to the hold lines. We were rushed by the short taxi and distracted from looking outside as we crossed the hold by our pre takeoff checks. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated both pilots were heads down and missed the ILS sign and ILS hold lines. He said the tower advised we had missed the flashing lights, but after a discussion with the tower on the radio it was determined flashing lights did not exist on that end of the airport. He said they turned around and found a red ILS sign next to faded lines on the pavement.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON TAXI OUT FROM FBO AT SDF, CL60 CREW FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE ILS HOLD LINE. THE CREW WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI BACK TO THE PROPER SPOT TO HOLD.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED FBO AT SDF ENRTE TO RWY 17L. GND INSTRUCTED US TO HOLD SHORT OF THE ILS CLEARWAY, WHICH IS ONLY A VERY SHORT DISTANCE AFTER THE TURN ONTO TXWY E FROM THE FBO. WE CROSSED THE HOLD LINE WHILE STILL ACCOMPLISHING THE TAXI CHECKS. AS I APPROACHED THE RWY, I REALIZED WE WERE ALREADY PAST THE ILS HOLD, AND STOPPED AROUND 50 YARDS PAST THE ILS HOLD. AS WE WERE STOPPING, GND CALLED US AND ALSO INSTRUCTED US TO STOP. WE THEN TAXIED BACK TO THE PROPER SPOT. GND TOLD US WE SHOULD'VE STOPPED AT THE FLASHING LIGHTS. THERE ARE NO FLASHING LIGHTS ON 'E' FOR THE ILS HOLD LINE. WHILE THE HOLD LINE IS CLEARLY VISIBLE, IT'S FADED SIGNIFICANTLY. THE RED 'ILS' SIGN IS POSTED NEXT TO THE HOLD LINES. WE WERE RUSHED BY THE SHORT TAXI AND DISTRACTED FROM LOOKING OUTSIDE AS WE CROSSED THE HOLD BY OUR PRE TKOF CHECKS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED BOTH PLTS WERE HEADS DOWN AND MISSED THE ILS SIGN AND ILS HOLD LINES. HE SAID THE TWR ADVISED WE HAD MISSED THE FLASHING LIGHTS, BUT AFTER A DISCUSSION WITH THE TWR ON THE RADIO IT WAS DETERMINED FLASHING LIGHTS DID NOT EXIST ON THAT END OF THE ARPT. HE SAID THEY TURNED AROUND AND FOUND A RED ILS SIGN NEXT TO FADED LINES ON THE PAVEMENT.
