Narrative:
Air carrier flight departed at XA55 local and had a gear retraction malfunction. We declared an emergency and upon reading the checklist, we discovered landing alternate extension door above first officer was open, thus causing the gear to stay down. Only check of the landing alternate extension door is done on the first flight of the day checklist. This was our second departure of the day so it was closed for the first flight. My guess is that maintenance came in and opened it and forgot to close it. But it is not on the checklist so we didn't check it before the second departure.
