Narrative:
Upon takeoff and subsequent gear retraction; nose gear failed to retract and stow. Leveled off at 5000 ft and asked for vectors back to the airport. QRH consulted and appropriate checklist accomplished. Emergency declared and airport rescue and fire fighting requested. Gear came down normally; and landed overweight. Taxied to the gate; and requested maintenance.

Title: A MD80's nose gear failed to retract after takeoff. An emergency was declared with a return to land at the departure airport.
Narrative: Upon takeoff and subsequent gear retraction; nose gear failed to retract and stow. Leveled off at 5000 FT and asked for vectors back to the airport.
