Narrative:

En route to sjc from las at ZOA said for air carrier abbx to descend to FL270. I read back clearance and the captain started down. We were then told to contact joshua approach. I read back the frequency and changed over. On joshua frequency, they told us to go back to ZOA. Upon checking in I reported descending to FL270, and center said negative, remain at FL310 and turn 30 degrees right. The captain leveled off immediately and began the turn and climbing back to FL310. Center asked us to turn further right when I reported level at FL310 and he cleared us back direct hyp. He then issued a frequency change to air carrier baay who was at FL270. We saw traffic on TCASII at about 8 mi and 2600 ft below us, was about the closest we got, no RA. We asked the controller if there was a problem and he said it was ok and handed us off.
