Narrative:
Was initially given holding instructions for lrp. Approaching lrp; was given revised holding instructions for bunts. The clearance was hold at bunts at 13000 ft; 10 mi legs; efc of XA30. I entered all of the information in the FMC and watched as the aircraft entered the depicted holding pattern as expected. The controller then called and asked if we were making a right turn. We replied yes; and he said complete one hold using right turns but then make left turns as depicted for bunts. I then realized that I had not checked a chart to see if bunts had a depicted holding pattern. I had entered right in the FMC for a standard holding pattern. We had been slightly rushed to write down and enter a revised clearance but this is really no excuse for the mistake. During this time I was consulting the fom for an mu chart for the ATIS reported braking action of .18 which had concerned me for the landing at phl. Supplemental information from acn 649420: this in conjunction with the controller not telling us to hold as published created the mistake. Also; there was some cockpit confusion due to the runway condition in phl.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A300 CREW GIVEN HOLDING AT BUNTS UPON PHL ARR; FAILED TO SET L-HAND HOLDING IN THE FMC HOLD PAGE.
Narrative: WAS INITIALLY GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR LRP. APCHING LRP; WAS GIVEN REVISED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUNTS. THE CLRNC WAS HOLD AT BUNTS AT 13000 FT; 10 MI LEGS; EFC OF XA30. I ENTERED ALL OF THE INFO IN THE FMC AND WATCHED AS THE ACFT ENTERED THE DEPICTED HOLDING PATTERN AS EXPECTED. THE CTLR THEN CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE MAKING A R TURN. WE REPLIED YES; AND HE SAID COMPLETE ONE HOLD USING R TURNS BUT THEN MAKE L TURNS AS DEPICTED FOR BUNTS. I THEN REALIZED THAT I HAD NOT CHKED A CHART TO SEE IF BUNTS HAD A DEPICTED HOLDING PATTERN. I HAD ENTERED R IN THE FMC FOR A STANDARD HOLDING PATTERN. WE HAD BEEN SLIGHTLY RUSHED TO WRITE DOWN AND ENTER A REVISED CLRNC BUT THIS IS REALLY NO EXCUSE FOR THE MISTAKE. DURING THIS TIME I WAS CONSULTING THE FOM FOR AN MU CHART FOR THE ATIS RPTED BRAKING ACTION OF .18 WHICH HAD CONCERNED ME FOR THE LNDG AT PHL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 649420: THIS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CTLR NOT TELLING US TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED CREATED THE MISTAKE. ALSO; THERE WAS SOME COCKPIT CONFUSION DUE TO THE RWY CONDITION IN PHL.
