Narrative:

Air carrier flight from dfw. VMC conditions. At some point after the nobly fix; ATC notified the crew that the aircraft was 5 mi off course. The crew responded that we show on course. ATC gave the crew a heading of 080 degrees and tells the crew to intercept the departure on that heading. The captain selected the heading mode and turned right to 080 degrees; then selects the navigation mode. Upon selection of navigation mode; the aircraft abruptly turned to the left. ATC calls again and states that he shows the aircraft on a 020 degree heading. The crew responded that the aircraft is intercepting. ATC issues the heading of 080 degrees and tells the crew to intercept the departure from that heading. The captain selects the heading mode and again turns right to 080 degrees. The aircraft rolls wings level and the captain then selects the navigation mode. The aircraft intercepts the departure and no further vectors were issued.
