Narrative:
Air carrier flight from dfw. VMC conditions. At some point after the nobly fix; ATC notified the crew that the aircraft was 5 mi off course. The crew responded that we show on course. ATC gave the crew a heading of 080 degrees and tells the crew to intercept the departure on that heading. The captain selected the heading mode and turned right to 080 degrees; then selects the navigation mode. Upon selection of navigation mode; the aircraft abruptly turned to the left. ATC calls again and states that he shows the aircraft on a 020 degree heading. The crew responded that the aircraft is intercepting. ATC issues the heading of 080 degrees and tells the crew to intercept the departure from that heading. The captain selects the heading mode and again turns right to 080 degrees. The aircraft rolls wings level and the captain then selects the navigation mode. The aircraft intercepts the departure and no further vectors were issued.

Title: CARJ FLT CREW ADVISED BY ATC OFF COURSE ON RNAV SID FROM DFW.
Narrative: ACR FLT FROM DFW. VMC CONDITIONS. AT SOME POINT AFTER THE NOBLY FIX; ATC NOTIFIED THE CREW THAT THE ACFT WAS 5 MI OFF COURSE. THE CREW RESPONDED THAT WE SHOW ON COURSE. ATC GAVE THE CREW A HDG OF 080 DEGS AND TELLS THE CREW TO INTERCEPT THE DEP ON THAT HDG. THE CAPT SELECTED THE HDG MODE AND TURNED RIGHT TO 080 DEGS; THEN SELECTS THE NAV MODE. UPON SELECTION OF NAV MODE; THE ACFT ABRUPTLY TURNED TO THE LEFT. ATC CALLS AGAIN AND STATES THAT HE SHOWS THE ACFT ON A 020 DEG HDG. THE CREW RESPONDED THAT THE ACFT IS INTERCEPTING. ATC ISSUES THE HDG OF 080 DEGS AND TELLS THE CREW TO INTERCEPT THE DEP FROM THAT HDG. THE CAPT SELECTS THE HDG MODE AND AGAIN TURNS RIGHT TO 080 DEGS. THE ACFT ROLLS WINGS LEVEL AND THE CAPT THEN SELECTS THE NAV MODE. THE ACFT INTERCEPTS THE DEP AND NO FURTHER VECTORS WERE ISSUED.
