Narrative:
Throttle connection on home built was not satisfactory to ensure safety and aircraft received damage; but no injuries occurred. It appears that the lock nut on the turnbuckle was not satisfactory and additional safety wire should have been used. The throttle became disconnected on final approach to landing; resulting in a hard landing and some damage to the aircraft. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated with the loss of the throttle connection; the airplane had too much power for landing but not enough power to go around. The cause was the lock nut on the throttle linkage backed off and throttle control was lost. The airplane was hard landed and then ground looped; incurring damage to the wing spars. The incident occurred at a private field. The airplane is a home built kit airplane but was not built by the reporter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A KITFOX IV INCURRED DAMAGE WHEN ON APCH TO A SHORT FIELD; PLT LOST THROTTLE CTL AND MADE A HARD LNDG WITH A GND LOOP.
Narrative: THROTTLE CONNECTION ON HOME BUILT WAS NOT SATISFACTORY TO ENSURE SAFETY AND ACFT RECEIVED DAMAGE; BUT NO INJURIES OCCURRED. IT APPEARS THAT THE LOCK NUT ON THE TURNBUCKLE WAS NOT SATISFACTORY AND ADDITIONAL SAFETY WIRE SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED. THE THROTTLE BECAME DISCONNECTED ON FINAL APCH TO LNDG; RESULTING IN A HARD LNDG AND SOME DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED WITH THE LOSS OF THE THROTTLE CONNECTION; THE AIRPLANE HAD TOO MUCH PWR FOR LNDG BUT NOT ENOUGH PWR TO GO AROUND. THE CAUSE WAS THE LOCK NUT ON THE THROTTLE LINKAGE BACKED OFF AND THROTTLE CTL WAS LOST. THE AIRPLANE WAS HARD LANDED AND THEN GND LOOPED; INCURRING DAMAGE TO THE WING SPARS. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT A PVT FIELD. THE AIRPLANE IS A HOME BUILT KIT AIRPLANE BUT WAS NOT BUILT BY THE RPTR.
