Narrative:

On the morning of oct/thu/05; the field trip in ZZZ called me informing me of a cracked front accessory case on aircraft X right engine. I requested part number of the front of case. They gave me part #xyz. On our spare engine; the part manual 72-21-00; which is only on microfilm and not on-line; the parts were both compatible; post service bulletin. With that knowledge; we removed and sent parts to ZZZ. When it was time to replace part back on spare engine; we found that they were both different. I ended up calling engineering to find out which is correct part for that engine. He does not know; he must call engineering in engine shop to find out what main bearing is installed. Still the just pick any case and built it up for that engine. After that conversation; we had an idea that the incorrect part was installed on aircraft X. If all information was available to us; this would not happen. This happened on a wkend and there was no one to talk to.
