Narrative:

Aircraft was at the gate. Captain called near departure time saying ramp reported dent on lower part of door 1L. An FBO mechanic was called and inspected area found dent to be 1/4 inch wide; 2 1/8 inches long and 1/32 inch deep on the lower gate area. I looked up srm reference and used srm 52-10-01 page 101 entry door skin and it referenced me to srm 52-00-01 page 201 which allowed me to make a carry forward item to rechk and repair at next 'C' check. After aircraft departed I found another srm reference about the lower gate area damage in srm 52-10-02 entry door structure that did not allow any dents in the door gate areas. The cf item was immediately assigned to be fixed at the arrival station. At the arrival station the dent was inspected and found that it was not a dent but a gouge that was reworked and within limits of srm 52-10-02. When the FBO mechanic arrived the flight was on delay already. After he looked at the damage. He stated it was a dent. I quickly looked up the limits for the dent. I used the entry door skin reference 52-10-01 and made the cf item. I did not know the door gate areas were under the entry door structure reference which does not allow any dents in the gate area. When I discovered the error that I used the wrong reference I had the item assigned to be fixed at the arrival station.

Title: A B737-500 HAD A DENT IN THE GATE OF DOOR 1L AND WAS DEFERRED USING THE INCORRECT STRUCTURAL REPAIR LIMITS.

Narrative: ACFT WAS AT THE GATE. CAPT CALLED NEAR DEP TIME SAYING RAMP RPTED DENT ON LOWER PART OF DOOR 1L. AN FBO MECH WAS CALLED AND INSPECTED AREA FOUND DENT TO BE 1/4 INCH WIDE; 2 1/8 INCHES LONG AND 1/32 INCH DEEP ON THE LOWER GATE AREA. I LOOKED UP SRM REF AND USED SRM 52-10-01 PAGE 101 ENTRY DOOR SKIN AND IT REFED ME TO SRM 52-00-01 PAGE 201 WHICH ALLOWED ME TO MAKE A CARRY FORWARD ITEM TO RECHK AND REPAIR AT NEXT 'C' CHK. AFTER ACFT DEPARTED I FOUND ANOTHER SRM REF ABOUT THE LOWER GATE AREA DAMAGE IN SRM 52-10-02 ENTRY DOOR STRUCTURE THAT DID NOT ALLOW ANY DENTS IN THE DOOR GATE AREAS. THE CF ITEM WAS IMMEDIATELY ASSIGNED TO BE FIXED AT THE ARR STATION. AT THE ARR STATION THE DENT WAS INSPECTED AND FOUND THAT IT WAS NOT A DENT BUT A GOUGE THAT WAS REWORKED AND WITHIN LIMITS OF SRM 52-10-02. WHEN THE FBO MECH ARRIVED THE FLT WAS ON DELAY ALREADY. AFTER HE LOOKED AT THE DAMAGE. HE STATED IT WAS A DENT. I QUICKLY LOOKED UP THE LIMITS FOR THE DENT. I USED THE ENTRY DOOR SKIN REF 52-10-01 AND MADE THE CF ITEM. I DID NOT KNOW THE DOOR GATE AREAS WERE UNDER THE ENTRY DOOR STRUCTURE REF WHICH DOES NOT ALLOW ANY DENTS IN THE GATE AREA. WHEN I DISCOVERED THE ERROR THAT I USED THE WRONG REF I HAD THE ITEM ASSIGNED TO BE FIXED AT THE ARR STATION.
