Narrative:

Aircraft #1 was issued a clearance direct kubic to short-cut him and keep him north of aircraft #2. Aircraft #1 was given descent clearance to cross kubic at 8000 ft. Aircraft descending from FL190 was expediting through aircraft #2 at 2.9 mi and 100 ft vertical. The sector was very busy. Additional staffing and personnel to assist busy sectors would have prevented this situation. Excellent decision and good reaction by the controller to expedite the descent of aircraft #2; being a jet (the better performer) already on a descent profile and turning the slower king air west into the wind.
