Narrative:
The load schedule presented to me showed that our takeoff weight was within 100 pounds of ATOG based on structural landing weight. The load schedule showed that 16 child weights had been taken. In the presences of the operations agent; I asked the flight attendant to take a count of the children on board. I was trying to build a pad greater than 100 pounds before I departed in order to limit excess fuel burn en route. The operations agent; when hearing my request for a recount; volunteered that he may have 'fudged' a bit on the child count. The flight attendant's child count turned up 8 children versus the operations agent's 16. I had 1200 pounds off freight off loaded. This produced a more acceptable aircraft weight. The point must be made that all parameters involving landing must be done correctly. Everything we do with the aircraft comes down to performance; and a significant part of performance is aircraft weight.

Title: B737 FLT CREW HAS THE IMPROPER PAX COUNT FOR WT AND BAL. FLT CREW HAS THE PAX COUNT RECALCULATED AND OFF-LOADS 1200 LBS OF CARGO TO COMPENSATE.
Narrative: THE LOAD SCHEDULE PRESENTED TO ME SHOWED THAT OUR TKOF WT WAS WITHIN 100 LBS OF ATOG BASED ON STRUCTURAL LNDG WT. THE LOAD SCHEDULE SHOWED THAT 16 CHILD WTS HAD BEEN TAKEN. IN THE PRESENCES OF THE OPS AGENT; I ASKED THE FLT ATTENDANT TO TAKE A COUNT OF THE CHILDREN ON BOARD. I WAS TRYING TO BUILD A PAD GREATER THAN 100 LBS BEFORE I DEPARTED IN ORDER TO LIMIT EXCESS FUEL BURN ENRTE. THE OPS AGENT; WHEN HEARING MY REQUEST FOR A RECOUNT; VOLUNTEERED THAT HE MAY HAVE 'FUDGED' A BIT ON THE CHILD COUNT. THE FLT ATTENDANT'S CHILD COUNT TURNED UP 8 CHILDREN VERSUS THE OPS AGENT'S 16. I HAD 1200 LBS OFF FREIGHT OFF LOADED. THIS PRODUCED A MORE ACCEPTABLE ACFT WT. THE POINT MUST BE MADE THAT ALL PARAMETERS INVOLVING LNDG MUST BE DONE CORRECTLY. EVERYTHING WE DO WITH THE ACFT COMES DOWN TO PERFORMANCE; AND A SIGNIFICANT PART OF PERFORMANCE IS ACFT WT.
