Narrative:
Departing tvc for yip IFR (cleared as filed climb to 3000 ft) cleared to taxi to runway 36. Began taxi; taxied to end of runway. Call on radio that I was at runway 36 ready for departure. Received a call back that I was cleared to 7000 ft. I read back cleared to 7000 ft -- thinking I was cleared for takeoff and a climb to 7000 ft -- I took the runway and started departing. At that point I received a call asking where I was. I stated on runway taking off. Then told I was still on ground and to go to tower. Tower gave me fly runway heading to 3000 ft; which I did. Rest of flight normal. Some factors: I had FLIP-flop radios with ground-backed by tower frequency. At runway I pushed the button and gave the call for ready to depart on runway 36. I later found the radio had not change to tower and I was still on ground frequency. When I received cleared to 7000 ft; I thought it was the tower. I stated that I was cleared to 7000 ft and cleared for takeoff. There was no further call back; till I was at lift off. Then asked where I was.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT DEPARTS TVC WITHOUT CLRNC WHILE STILL ON GND FREQ.
Narrative: DEPARTING TVC FOR YIP IFR (CLRED AS FILED CLB TO 3000 FT) CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 36. BEGAN TAXI; TAXIED TO END OF RWY. CALL ON RADIO THAT I WAS AT RWY 36 READY FOR DEP. RECEIVED A CALL BACK THAT I WAS CLRED TO 7000 FT. I READ BACK CLRED TO 7000 FT -- THINKING I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF AND A CLB TO 7000 FT -- I TOOK THE RWY AND STARTED DEPARTING. AT THAT POINT I RECEIVED A CALL ASKING WHERE I WAS. I STATED ON RWY TAKING OFF. THEN TOLD I WAS STILL ON GND AND TO GO TO TWR. TWR GAVE ME FLY RWY HDG TO 3000 FT; WHICH I DID. REST OF FLT NORMAL. SOME FACTORS: I HAD FLIP-FLOP RADIOS WITH GND-BACKED BY TWR FREQ. AT RWY I PUSHED THE BUTTON AND GAVE THE CALL FOR READY TO DEPART ON RWY 36. I LATER FOUND THE RADIO HAD NOT CHANGE TO TWR AND I WAS STILL ON GND FREQ. WHEN I RECEIVED CLRED TO 7000 FT; I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TWR. I STATED THAT I WAS CLRED TO 7000 FT AND CLRED FOR TKOF. THERE WAS NO FURTHER CALL BACK; TILL I WAS AT LIFT OFF. THEN ASKED WHERE I WAS.
