Narrative:
Departed ZZZ en route to ZZZ1; MD10 aircraft; taxi/takeoff/departure were normal proceeding direct to VOR; climbing to FL320. Passing FL280 (approximately) heard a 'thud' and felt the aircraft yaw right. Instrument indications showed #3 engine had failed. There was no fire indications. I took control of the aircraft and directed first officer to execute checklists and declared an emergency with center. Started a descent and turned back for a landing. At this point; we had been airborne approximately 30 mins. Dumped fuel to reduce aircraft weight for landing. Received vectors for an approach (ILS). After landing we did not immediately evacuate/evacuation. Remained on board until fire department personnel indicated smoke visible from #3 engine. Evacuate/evacuationed using inflatable slide. No injuries.
