Narrative:

Ny departure told me I was off course and close to other traffic. Upon departure from teb on the teb 5 departure; I experienced a failure of ahrs 1 and a partial failure of pilot's EFIS resulting in total loss of pilot's artificial horizon; flight director; automatic pilot; and TCAS; which screen went totally black. Pilot's directional gyro on the secondary EFIS screen appeared to be working; but was in fact precessing. When I discovered the pilot's dg and co-pilot's dg were in conflict; I had to diagnose the problem and determine which one was correct. It would have been simpler and quicker to diagnose and correct if the pilot's dg had simply gone black also. Upon determining that the co-pilot's ahrs was more likely correct; I brought input co-pilot's ahrs into pilot's side EFIS display. Thereafter the flight instruments performed perfectly and I continued my flight without further incident. When I returned to my base; the ahrs 1 unit was found to be defective and was replaced immediately.

Title: PILATUS PC12 HAS THE AHRS FAIL DURING CLB ON THE TEB 5 DEP. ATC ISSUED AN ADVISORY.

Narrative: NY DEP TOLD ME I WAS OFF COURSE AND CLOSE TO OTHER TFC. UPON DEP FROM TEB ON THE TEB 5 DEP; I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF AHRS 1 AND A PARTIAL FAILURE OF PLT'S EFIS RESULTING IN TOTAL LOSS OF PLT'S ARTIFICIAL HORIZON; FLT DIRECTOR; AUTO PLT; AND TCAS; WHICH SCREEN WENT TOTALLY BLACK. PLT'S DIRECTIONAL GYRO ON THE SECONDARY EFIS SCREEN APPEARED TO BE WORKING; BUT WAS IN FACT PRECESSING. WHEN I DISCOVERED THE PLT'S DG AND CO-PLT'S DG WERE IN CONFLICT; I HAD TO DIAGNOSE THE PROB AND DETERMINE WHICH ONE WAS CORRECT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SIMPLER AND QUICKER TO DIAGNOSE AND CORRECT IF THE PLT'S DG HAD SIMPLY GONE BLACK ALSO. UPON DETERMINING THAT THE CO-PLT'S AHRS WAS MORE LIKELY CORRECT; I BROUGHT INPUT CO-PLT'S AHRS INTO PLT'S SIDE EFIS DISPLAY. THEREAFTER THE FLT INSTRUMENTS PERFORMED PERFECTLY AND I CONTINUED MY FLT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY BASE; THE AHRS 1 UNIT WAS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE AND WAS REPLACED IMMEDIATELY.
