Narrative:
We were in line for departure at dtw on taxiway Y abeam intersection Y16; third in line behind aircraft Y. Tower instructed us to taxi into position and hold 'inside aircraft Y.' we hesitated; and tower adamantly instructed us to taxi into position and hold. Aircraft Y was at this time turning onto the runway. We proceeded to turn onto the runway at Y16 and before we crossed the hold short line; tower instructed us to stop. He then instructed aircraft Y to cancel their takeoff clearance (we never heard him clear aircraft Y for takeoff) and issued us instructions to take off at that intersection.

Narrative: WE WERE IN LINE FOR DEP AT DTW ON TXWY Y ABEAM INTXN Y16; THIRD IN LINE BEHIND ACFT Y. TWR INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD 'INSIDE ACFT Y.' WE HESITATED; AND TWR ADAMANTLY INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. ACFT Y WAS AT THIS TIME TURNING ONTO THE RWY. WE PROCEEDED TO TURN ONTO THE RWY AT Y16 AND BEFORE WE CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE; TWR INSTRUCTED US TO STOP.
