Narrative:
Departed atl without receiving the clearance from clearance delivery. This occurred primarily because of a lack of vigilance to preflight duties. The normal flow was interrupted by a fueling problem; and the preflight briefing never took place; despite the briefing being on the checklist. We missed the first clue; which was ground control's lack of familiarity with our flight number. Secondly after departing; tower control requested that we squawk the correct code (he gave it to us at that time). It was at this time that we realized that a clearance had not been received. Since the departure and squawk is the only thing given in an atl clearance (normally); it was not verified with ATC; as they appeared to have not caught the initial mistake. Granted there was risk in not verifying the clearance; but there was also risk in verifying; as it would have self-disclosed the violation. In the future; I would have asked atl departure to simply verify the route upon check-in.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 FLT CREW DEPARTS ATL WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: DEPARTED ATL WITHOUT RECEIVING THE CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY. THIS OCCURRED PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF A LACK OF VIGILANCE TO PREFLT DUTIES. THE NORMAL FLOW WAS INTERRUPTED BY A FUELING PROB; AND THE PREFLT BRIEFING NEVER TOOK PLACE; DESPITE THE BRIEFING BEING ON THE CHKLIST. WE MISSED THE FIRST CLUE; WHICH WAS GND CTL'S LACK OF FAMILIARITY WITH OUR FLT NUMBER. SECONDLY AFTER DEPARTING; TWR CTL REQUESTED THAT WE SQUAWK THE CORRECT CODE (HE GAVE IT TO US AT THAT TIME). IT WAS AT THIS TIME THAT WE REALIZED THAT A CLRNC HAD NOT BEEN RECEIVED. SINCE THE DEP AND SQUAWK IS THE ONLY THING GIVEN IN AN ATL CLRNC (NORMALLY); IT WAS NOT VERIFIED WITH ATC; AS THEY APPEARED TO HAVE NOT CAUGHT THE INITIAL MISTAKE. GRANTED THERE WAS RISK IN NOT VERIFYING THE CLRNC; BUT THERE WAS ALSO RISK IN VERIFYING; AS IT WOULD HAVE SELF-DISCLOSED THE VIOLATION. IN THE FUTURE; I WOULD HAVE ASKED ATL DEP TO SIMPLY VERIFY THE RTE UPON CHK-IN.
