Narrative:
ZNY asked us to expedite descent from 11000 ft. Captain in re-qualification sequence was the PF and I was performing 'PNF/cka' duties. Speed was reduced to 250 KTS at an upper altitude and given a westerly heading as opposed to the usual direct to camrn and cross 10 mi south. Suddenly ATC stated 'climb immediately to 10000 ft! Traffic at 12 O'clock position; niner thousand a B757!' the aircraft was in view as TCAS blared 'climb; traffic; climb.' the aircraft was an A320 which passed beneath and slightly right. Serious conflict was avoided and flight landed without incident. Cka called new york approach after clearing customs was informed the approach room was aware of the conflict but that it was TRACON not approach control's handling.
