Narrative:
On departure from ind; on the DAWWN3 SID. Given heading 170 degrees to intercept the DAWWN3 departure. Selected FMS; FMS would not navigation to the 174 degree radial to dawwn. Reenter information into FMS. Still would not navigation to 174 degree radial. Selected basic VOR navigation. We were east of course correcting to the west; when ATC asked what was our clearance. Informed ATC of the 170 degree heading to intercept the dawwn 3 departure. ATC then cleared us direct to dawwn intersection. The DAWWN3 SID is not really FMS friendly. To intercept a radial you must select the waypoint in front of you; then select intercept on the FMS. When doing this on the DAWWN3 SID you get the radial beyond dawwn intersection. Some sids and stars need to be idented as FMS unfriendly to prevent this from happening.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN EMB140 FLT CREW DEPARTING IND ON THE DAWWN DEP DEVIATE FROM THE PUBLISHED TRACK BECAUSE THEY HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH THE FMS.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM IND; ON THE DAWWN3 SID. GIVEN HDG 170 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE DAWWN3 DEP. SELECTED FMS; FMS WOULD NOT NAV TO THE 174 DEG RADIAL TO DAWWN. REENTER INFO INTO FMS. STILL WOULD NOT NAV TO 174 DEG RADIAL. SELECTED BASIC VOR NAV. WE WERE E OF COURSE CORRECTING TO THE W; WHEN ATC ASKED WHAT WAS OUR CLRNC. INFORMED ATC OF THE 170 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE DAWWN 3 DEP. ATC THEN CLRED US DIRECT TO DAWWN INTXN. THE DAWWN3 SID IS NOT REALLY FMS FRIENDLY. TO INTERCEPT A RADIAL YOU MUST SELECT THE WAYPOINT IN FRONT OF YOU; THEN SELECT INTERCEPT ON THE FMS. WHEN DOING THIS ON THE DAWWN3 SID YOU GET THE RADIAL BEYOND DAWWN INTXN. SOME SIDS AND STARS NEED TO BE IDENTED AS FMS UNFRIENDLY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING.
