Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 4 for takeoff; we received clearance to take off. Very shortly after beginning a rolling takeoff; we heard a radio transmission on tower frequency that sounded like 'cancel; guys.' this was followed very shortly by another transmission that sounded like 'cancel.' we then heard a third transmission that clearly sounded like 'did you get your clearance?' I decided to abort the takeoff; and we began the abort at about 50 KTS. The abort was done smoothly without extremely hard braking. After a short delay on the runway to get tower guidance; we taxied clear of the runway to the left at taxiway Y. We then began a short taxi back to the runway for takeoff. Without any hot brakes or other mechanical discrepancy; we concluded that it was safe to proceed on to pit. At pit; I telephoned lga tower. They explained that they made several calls using normal terminology; such as 'cancel takeoff clearance;' but that these xmissions must have been stepped on by other radio traffic. They had also sent around landing traffic (runway 31) because they couldn't confirm that we were aborting our takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB135 FLT CREW HAS TKOF CLRNC CANCELED FROM THE TWR AT LGA.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 4 FOR TKOF; WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAKE OFF. VERY SHORTLY AFTER BEGINNING A ROLLING TKOF; WE HEARD A RADIO XMISSION ON TWR FREQ THAT SOUNDED LIKE 'CANCEL; GUYS.' THIS WAS FOLLOWED VERY SHORTLY BY ANOTHER XMISSION THAT SOUNDED LIKE 'CANCEL.' WE THEN HEARD A THIRD XMISSION THAT CLRLY SOUNDED LIKE 'DID YOU GET YOUR CLRNC?' I DECIDED TO ABORT THE TKOF; AND WE BEGAN THE ABORT AT ABOUT 50 KTS. THE ABORT WAS DONE SMOOTHLY WITHOUT EXTREMELY HARD BRAKING. AFTER A SHORT DELAY ON THE RWY TO GET TWR GUIDANCE; WE TAXIED CLR OF THE RWY TO THE L AT TXWY Y. WE THEN BEGAN A SHORT TAXI BACK TO THE RWY FOR TKOF. WITHOUT ANY HOT BRAKES OR OTHER MECHANICAL DISCREPANCY; WE CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS SAFE TO PROCEED ON TO PIT. AT PIT; I TELEPHONED LGA TWR. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THEY MADE SEVERAL CALLS USING NORMAL TERMINOLOGY; SUCH AS 'CANCEL TKOF CLRNC;' BUT THAT THESE XMISSIONS MUST HAVE BEEN STEPPED ON BY OTHER RADIO TFC. THEY HAD ALSO SENT AROUND LNDG TFC (RWY 31) BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T CONFIRM THAT WE WERE ABORTING OUR TKOF.
