Narrative:

We were assigned the kennedy one/canarsie climb. First officer was PF. He is new; he's never flown as PF out of jfk. He briefed the departure. We discussed it and the importance of not flying past the cri 039 degree radial. I felt he understood we fly to the cri VOR direct then outbound on the cri 176(?) degree radial per his brief; and he briefed it properly. We took off. (First officer in green data with the cri 176 degree course selected. I was in white with the VOR #2 needle selected.) he initially flew direct to the VOR but then initiated a turn to the left. I asked him where he was going as I noticed the turn continue. At that time either tower or departure called us and said that we were the second plane that day to turn before the VOR and that we were to fly directly to the VOR (per the SID). He then gave us headings to follow. The controller was rather ticked off at us and flustered the first officer. After we got to cruise we discussed what had happened. He said that although he briefed it properly (and he did) he had in his mind the 176 degree radial and thus tried to turn towards it. Contributing to this: first officer's inexperience with flying jfk 1 departure. His having the 176 degree radial set into his mfd. My talking about not flying past the 039 degrees to make your turn outbound of the cri VOR. My suggestion (I think) to bug the 176 degrees. I told him that when I fly it; I am in green data with the 176 degree course selected and my VOR #1 (cri) needle also selected as guidance to the VOR (direct).

Title: CRJ200 CREW TURNS EARLY ON JFK 1 CRI CLB.

WE DISCUSSED IT AND THE IMPORTANCE OF NOT FLYING PAST THE CRI 039 DEG RADIAL. I FELT HE UNDERSTOOD WE FLY TO THE CRI VOR DIRECT THEN OUTBOUND ON THE CRI 176(?) DEG RADIAL PER HIS BRIEF; AND HE BRIEFED IT PROPERLY. WE TOOK OFF. (FO IN GREEN DATA WITH THE CRI 176 DEG COURSE SELECTED. I WAS IN WHITE WITH THE VOR #2 NEEDLE SELECTED.) HE INITIALLY FLEW DIRECT TO THE VOR BUT THEN INITIATED A TURN TO THE L. I ASKED HIM WHERE HE WAS GOING AS I NOTICED THE TURN CONTINUE. AT THAT TIME EITHER TWR OR DEP CALLED US AND SAID THAT WE WERE THE SECOND PLANE THAT DAY TO TURN BEFORE THE VOR AND THAT WE WERE TO FLY DIRECTLY TO THE VOR (PER THE SID). HE THEN GAVE US HDGS TO FOLLOW. THE CTLR WAS RATHER TICKED OFF AT US AND FLUSTERED THE FO. AFTER WE GOT TO CRUISE WE DISCUSSED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. HE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH HE BRIEFED IT PROPERLY (AND HE DID) HE HAD IN HIS MIND THE 176 DEG RADIAL AND THUS TRIED TO TURN TOWARDS IT. CONTRIBUTING TO THIS: FO'S INEXPERIENCE WITH FLYING JFK 1 DEP. HIS HAVING THE 176 DEG RADIAL SET INTO HIS MFD. MY TALKING ABOUT NOT FLYING PAST THE 039 DEGS TO MAKE YOUR TURN OUTBOUND OF THE CRI VOR. MY SUGGESTION (I THINK) TO BUG THE 176 DEGS.
