Narrative:

I was student training on an instrument 250 NM cross country. We filed for 6000 ft MSL initially. On departure; our clearance from clearance delivery issued us 7000 ft MSL. In our climb out a beechjet reported ice at 7000-8000 ft MSL as we were climbing through 4000 ft MSL to 7000 ft MSL. I discussed the situation with my student; and went through the decision making process with him. We requested 6000 ft MSL. Approach cleared us to 6000 ft (at 7000 ft we were IMC; below freeze; and picked up trace rime ice). At 6000 ft we were still IMC. Below freezing but no longer accumulating ice. We requested 5000 ft; ATC cleared us 5000 ft. We were below the overcast.
