Narrative:
Air carrier X on an 8 mi final to runway 22L was cleared to land runway 22L. Air carrier Y checked on the frequency on a 9 mi final; his airspeed indicated 50 KTS faster. The tower controller canceled air carrier Y's approach clearance and turned him 30 degrees left for collision avoidance. This took place during a position relief briefing. The oncoming controller saw what was going on and said he would take the position from that point.

Narrative: ACR X ON AN 8 MI FINAL TO RWY 22L WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 22L. ACR Y CHKED ON THE FREQ ON A 9 MI FINAL; HIS AIRSPD INDICATED 50 KTS FASTER. THE TWR CTLR CANCELED ACR Y'S APCH CLRNC AND TURNED HIM 30 DEGS L FOR COLLISION AVOIDANCE. THIS TOOK PLACE DURING A POS RELIEF BRIEFING.
