Narrative:
We were given a departure on runway 24 with a clearance of the teb 5 departure; climb to 5000 ft MSL for radar vectors. We briefed the departure which is to climb runway heading to 1500 ft MSL and then turn to a heading to 280 degrees and maintain 1500 ft MSL until 4.5 DME and then climb to 2000 ft MSL. However; I did not realize that my sic had selected 5000 ft MSL in the altitude selector and I missed it in my flight instrument scan. As is required in our checklist for a before takeoff briefing; we went through our standard takeoff briefing and I again mentioned the altitude leveloff at 1500 ft MSL. Once cleared for takeoff in which my sic was flying; we took off and were in our climb. We are required to call off 300 ft when we are approaching within 300 ft of a leveloff altitude. I made the call at around 1100 ft MSL and my sic acknowledged 'roger.' right at that time I was called by new york departure and was about to answer them when I noticed we were not leveling off at 1500 ft MSL. I immediately called altitude and assisted the controls in abruptly leveling off at 1500 ft MSL. It was at this time I realized the altitude selector was improperly set and immediately reset it 1500 ft MSL. I estimate we went up to 1700 ft MSL and them came down to 1400 ft MSL and then leveled off at 1500 ft MSL. I then responded back to ATC and was never advised by ATC if there was an altitude separation violation from them. After landing we discussed the situation between the sic and myself. For some reason; my sic was focused on the turn at 1500 ft MSL and that was all the 1500 ft MSL was for and to continuing to 5000 ft MSL. Compounded by this was the fact that my sic had looked at the chart earlier and it is a chart that is folded so it will fit in the binder. The part that is visible is the part that says to climb on runway heading and then commence a turn at 1500 ft MSL. It is only when you open the chart all the way; you see it further reads to maintain 1500 ft MSL. However; my sic had not done that and was fixated on just the turn even though we had briefed the level off.

Title: HAWKER 800XP FLT CREW HAS ALT DEV DURING TEB 5 DEP.
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN A DEP ON RWY 24 WITH A CLRNC OF THE TEB 5 DEP; CLIMB TO 5000 FT MSL FOR RADAR VECTORS. WE BRIEFED THE DEP WHICH IS TO CLB RWY HEADING TO 1500 FT MSL AND THEN TURN TO A HEADING TO 280 DEGS AND MAINTAIN 1500 FT MSL UNTIL 4.5 DME AND THEN CLIMB TO 2000 FT MSL. HOWEVER; I DID NOT REALIZE THAT MY SIC HAD SELECTED 5000 FT MSL IN THE ALT SELECTOR AND I MISSED IT IN MY FLT INSTRUMENT SCAN. AS IS REQUIRED IN OUR CHKLIST FOR A BEFORE TAKEOFF BRIEFING; WE WENT THROUGH OUR STANDARD TAKEOFF BRIEFING AND I AGAIN MENTIONED THE ALT LEVELOFF AT 1500 FT MSL. ONCE CLRED FOR TAKEOFF IN WHICH MY SIC WAS FLYING; WE TOOK OFF AND WERE IN OUR CLB. WE ARE REQUIRED TO CALL OFF 300 FT WHEN WE ARE APCHING WITHIN 300 FT OF A LEVELOFF ALT. I MADE THE CALL AT AROUND 1100 FT MSL AND MY SIC ACKNOWLEDGED 'ROGER.' RIGHT AT THAT TIME I WAS CALLED BY NEW YORK DEP AND WAS ABOUT TO ANSWER THEM WHEN I NOTICED WE WERE NOT LEVELING OFF AT 1500 FT MSL. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED ALT AND ASSISTED THE CONTROLS IN ABRUPTLY LEVELING OFF AT 1500 FT MSL. IT WAS AT THIS TIME I REALIZED THE ALT SELECTOR WAS IMPROPERLY SET AND IMMEDIATELY RESET IT 1500 FT MSL. I ESTIMATE WE WENT UP TO 1700 FT MSL AND THEM CAME DOWN TO 1400 FT MSL AND THEN LEVELED OFF AT 1500 FT MSL. I THEN RESPONDED BACK TO ATC AND WAS NEVER ADVISED BY ATC IF THERE WAS AN ALT SEPARATION VIOLATION FROM THEM. AFTER LNDG WE DISCUSSED THE SITUATION BETWEEN THE SIC AND MYSELF. THE PART THAT IS VISIBLE IS THE PART THAT SAYS TO CLB ON RWY HEADING AND THEN COMMENCE A TURN AT 1500 FT MSL.
