Narrative:
Normal sequence of events. Mountain 5 departure north off runway 34R. On departure; I was flying and misread the departure procedure to be at 4000 ft turn to heading 070 degrees. In actuality it reads at D8 off sea and at or above 4000 ft turn to heading 070 degrees. In acting on what I thought was at 4000 ft turn; I turned about 1 mile early (6.8 to 7.0 DME to 070 degrees). It was totally my fault. By the time we caught the error; we were already committed to the turn. Be sure to carefully read the SID or STAR. I really just missed the D8 description of the fix.
