Narrative:

Approximately 20 NM from landing the lead flight attendant called and said there was a strange odor in the cabin near row 9. A few moments later she said that there was now smoke in the cabin and a strong odor of burning electrical or plastic material. An emergency was declared and we were cleared straight in to land. The smoke and fumes checklist was accomplished and just prior to landing the smoke was reported to have decreased; but it again increased at touchdown. A normal landing with equipment standing by was made and after assessing the situation in the cabin; I decided not to evacuate and to proceed to the gate. By this time; the smoke had dissipated but the smell lingered. Deplaning was normal. Log write was made and I verbally consulted with maintenance.
