Narrative:
Inbound for landing at bdr from east for runway 11. Advised to report charles island. After reporting charles island (4 NM to the east) told to report mid field left downwind. On the 45 degree to the downwind; low wing aircraft was spotted at our 11 O'clock position; closing fast. Turned hard left (50 degree bank) and descended. Other aircraft passed to our right side. Left turn was made because other airplane appeared to be turning left; and climbing. Heard controller previously tell other airplane to make a wide left departure even though it was headed west to hpn. The other airplane did not make a wide left turn and was in about the normal crosswind turning downwind. When controller saw us taking evasive action; he advised that he saw us maneuvering and to not fly through the runway 11 departure corridor. I acknowledged and turned back into the downwind. It appears the other aircraft did not follow ATC instructions and was not looking for us as traffic. This event would have been a collision if I had not taken evasive action.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LIGHT AIRCRAFT INBOUND TO BDR TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH A PA-28.
Narrative: INBOUND FOR LNDG AT BDR FROM E FOR RWY 11. ADVISED TO RPT CHARLES ISLAND. AFTER RPTING CHARLES ISLAND (4 NM TO THE E) TOLD TO RPT MID FIELD L DOWNWIND. ON THE 45 DEG TO THE DOWNWIND; LOW WING ACFT WAS SPOTTED AT OUR 11 O'CLOCK POS; CLOSING FAST. TURNED HARD L (50 DEG BANK) AND DSNDED. OTHER ACFT PASSED TO OUR R SIDE. L TURN WAS MADE BECAUSE OTHER AIRPLANE APPEARED TO BE TURNING L; AND CLBING. HEARD CTLR PREVIOUSLY TELL OTHER AIRPLANE TO MAKE A WIDE L DEP EVEN THOUGH IT WAS HEADED W TO HPN. THE OTHER AIRPLANE DID NOT MAKE A WIDE L TURN AND WAS IN ABOUT THE NORMAL XWIND TURNING DOWNWIND. WHEN CTLR SAW US TAKING EVASIVE ACTION; HE ADVISED THAT HE SAW US MANEUVERING AND TO NOT FLY THROUGH THE RWY 11 DEP CORRIDOR. I ACKNOWLEDGED AND TURNED BACK INTO THE DOWNWIND. IT APPEARS THE OTHER ACFT DID NOT FOLLOW ATC INSTRUCTIONS AND WAS NOT LOOKING FOR US AS TFC. THIS EVENT WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISION IF I HAD NOT TAKEN EVASIVE ACTION.
