Narrative:
Cruise flight FL350. Visible smoke of electrical nature in cabin reported by cabin crew. Strong electrical smoke fumes in cockpit. Red box items for cabin fire/smoke accomplished. Emergency declared. Intentions to land at ZZZZ transmitted. Permission granted immediately. Descent and vectoring began immediately. Note: ZZZZ1 and ZZZZ2 considered as they were destination and suitable alternates respectively. Captain's desire to fight fire on the ground rather than in-flight is the reason for landing in ZZZZ as it was by far the closest emergency airport in point of time. The flight landed normally; the situation stabilized; and emergency evacuate/evacuation was not performed. The aircraft; her crew of 6; her 132 passenger; and all her cargo are safe. This is an optimum outcome.
