Narrative:
During the preflight of the cockpit; just a few mins before departure; I noticed that the captain's audio selector panel was different from mine. The captain's panel had no means of selecting HF communications; even though the aircraft was HF equipped (an overwater model). It was the panel used for the basic domestic B757. Captain had me query company maintenance and they began researching the 'legality' of the confign. Company maintenance decided that it was best to swap out the captain's audio panel to the correct confign.
