Narrative:
On climb out at approximately 12000 ft we received a master caution; ice protection and left pitot lights on their respective panels. At the exact same time a burning smell was noted in the cockpit; faintly at first. The QRH was completed for the left pitot and the condition remained the same. The burning smell intensified slightly and memory items for smoke; fumes were in the cockpit; were performed. An emergency was declared with ATC and a vector for ZZZ1 was received since it was the closet airport in point of time. The flight attendant was briefed on the emergency with a precautionary landing with the expectation to taxi to the gate and no evacuate/evacuation would be required unless ordered by the crew or we were incapacitated. The first officer did an excellent job of flying the aircraft as I managed the situation with dispatch; ATC; and the flight attendant. The QRH and normal checklists were completed and an uneventful emergency landing was performed. It was less than 10 mins from the time of the emergency declaration and we were safely on the ground.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT AT APPROX 12000 FT WE RECEIVED A MASTER CAUTION; ICE PROTECTION AND L PITOT LIGHTS ON THEIR RESPECTIVE PANELS. AT THE EXACT SAME TIME A BURNING SMELL WAS NOTED IN THE COCKPIT; FAINTLY AT FIRST. THE QRH WAS COMPLETED FOR THE L PITOT AND THE CONDITION REMAINED THE SAME. THE FLT ATTENDANT WAS BRIEFED ON THE EMER WITH A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG WITH THE EXPECTATION TO TAXI TO THE GATE AND NO EVAC WOULD BE REQUIRED UNLESS ORDERED BY THE CREW OR WE WERE INCAPACITATED. THE FO DID AN EXCELLENT JOB OF FLYING THE ACFT AS I MANAGED THE SITUATION WITH DISPATCH; ATC; AND THE FLT ATTENDANT. THE QRH AND NORMAL CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED AND AN UNEVENTFUL EMER LNDG WAS PERFORMED. IT WAS LESS THAN 10 MINS FROM THE TIME OF THE EMER DECLARATION AND WE WERE SAFELY ON THE GND.
