Narrative:
As the flight approached the FAF; a flap selection to a flap setting of 2 degrees was selected. The flap fail message appeared. The approach was abandoned till the flight crew could evaluate and address the problem. The dispatcher and maintenance were advised by ACARS. The crew was informed along with the passenger as to what the problem was and what type of landing to expect. The QRH was followed; an emergency was declared; and the flight returned to the field for a landing and taxied to the gate ahead of schedule.

Title: FLIGHT CREW OF EMBRAER 190 RECEIVES FLAPS FAIL MESSAGE ON FINAL APPROACH. ABANDON APPROACH; FOLLOW THE QRH PROCEDURE AND LAND AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
Narrative: AS THE FLT APCHED THE FAF; A FLAP SELECTION TO A FLAP SETTING OF 2 DEGS WAS SELECTED. THE FLAP FAIL MESSAGE APPEARED. THE APCH WAS ABANDONED TILL THE FLT CREW COULD EVALUATE AND ADDRESS THE PROB. THE DISPATCHER AND MAINT WERE ADVISED BY ACARS. THE CREW WAS INFORMED ALONG WITH THE PAX AS TO WHAT THE PROB WAS AND WHAT TYPE OF LNDG TO EXPECT. THE QRH WAS FOLLOWED; AN EMER WAS DECLARED; AND THE FLT RETURNED TO THE FIELD FOR A LNDG AND TAXIED TO THE GATE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
