Climbing through 12;000 ft; ord departure asked us our airspeed. The first officer replied '270 KTS.' the controller told us to maintain 250 KTS as per the SID. We then slowed to 250 KTS.

Title: An MD88 flight crew exceeded the 250 KT speed limit on departure out of ORD.
Narrative: Climbing through 12;000 FT; ORD Departure asked us our airspeed. The First Officer replied '270 KTS.' The Controller told us to maintain 250 KTS as per the SID. We then slowed to 250 KTS.
