Narrative:
We were holding short of runway 17L at taxiway ef. Air carrier Y (call sign same last 2 numbers) pulled up at held short with out a radio call on tower frequency. This is normal; we 'monitor tower' north of taxiway zulu; tower called 'air carrier Y; position and hold runway 19R.' we heard 'air carrier X; position and hold.' which we did. The tower controller promptly informed us of our error and confirmed 'air carrier Y; hold position.' the controller told us to just hold our takeoff position; then cleared us for takeoff. There was no apparent traffic conflict as arrivals were using runway 17C. Without the opportunity to hear similar sounding call signs check on; these type occurrence may not be uncommon. Our company has so many flights we work diligently to respond only to our own designation. Unfortunately; with varying cockpit workloads we are not always successful.
